When chatting around the braai about the irritation with load shedding the question, “do you have a generator yet?” is guaranteed to come up. But how much is known about inverter generators and their benefits?
Let’s break down the difference between a standard generator and inverter generator
What is a generator?
A generator is a machine powered by a diesel or petrol engine which drives an alternator and the alternator creates electricity. So, when the power is out, a generator can create electricity for your home or business, to keep the lights on for a few hours.
An inverter turns DC (direct current) and converts it in AC (alternating current) which we can then use to power gadgets and appliances in our home. An inverter generator does not use a separate alternator, but it uses the flywheel of the engine which has copper windings on the flywheel. This makes the inverter far more efficient and compact than other conventional generators. Inverters also use smaller engines due to their improved efficiency and use less fuel. They also run more quietly too.
What is a silent inverter generator?
Inverters produce very clean electricity, which is a pure sine wave, unlike normal generators which have a total harmonic distortion of 20% or less.
When it comes to silent inverter generators, these are called as such because they operate at a noise level of between 63dB and 65dB. This is much lower than a traditional generator, which is known for being a noisy machine.
If you require a quiet inverter, its best to look at buying or renting one as they are ideal for industries, businesses and homes where low noise levels are required.
